Shadow Rider: One who watches their shadow with admiration while riding a horse

Shadow Riders, a contemporary art exhibition and social practice project, explores the role of clothing and gear in western culture. On view at the Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum in Elko, Nevada, during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the show unpacks ideas of identity, regionalism, craftsmanship, and pride in appearance through the tools we use and the things we wear.

Radio Elko interview

“Self-aggrandizingly, I’d call myself a curator, but I’m mostly just somebody who wanted to bring a bunch of cool artists together to my hometown…”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Spearheaded by painter and former Ford model Gina Teichert (who grew up in Elko County), Shadow Riders brings together four perspectives on the theme.

Denver sculptor Maeve Eichelberger is known for her clear acrylic saddles, tack, and multi-dimensional collages.

Sierra foothills artist Alex Ziv delivers cutting cultural commentary in the form of symbol-rich western shirts and tattoo inspired still life.

Daniel Falcón, a Brooklyn-based painter with roots in Venezuela, brings a deep understanding of tailoring gleaned from roles at Ralph Lauren and other menswear brands.

With support from the state of Nevada, the artists are bringing contemporary art to the former home of the GS Garcia saddle shop in historic downtown.
